I see that there are pregnant bloggers all over the internet right now and, being a well-seasoned mother for, ummm, over two years, (okay, okay. I also was a nanny and a storyteller for a bookstore so I have a few credentials, okay?) I feel inspired to share some of my favorite bedtime storybooks. There are a ton, of course, but here are a few of my top four:

Jamberry

The illustrations in this are so vibrant and the verses are TONS of fun to read aloud. In fact, this is the very first book I ever read to my baby (I even read it when he was in my womb <3 book="" ever.="" favorite="" his="" is="" much="" my="" nbsp="" p="" pretty="">

Ten Apples Up on Top!

This book is awesome. It's funny, teaches counting and has a lion in it. It was actually written by Dr Seuss (under the pseudonym of Theo LeSieg). My baby LOVED this book so much, even when he was super-tiny.

Gossie

This is the first in a series of books is so delightful - sweet, simple and quirky. The spare look of the illustrations does a wonderful job of keeping the attention of babies (and mamas and daddies).

Moo, Baa, La La La!

Sandra Boynton can pretty much do no wrong when it comes to books. Her books are SO funny, quirky and super easy-to-read. This one is kind of the most basic and shortest of her books but Peter had this memorized early (he also adores Let's Dance, Little Pookie).

Call them guilty pleasures (although I never would - pleasure, definitely, guilty, never), call them whatever you want. These are six songs (of a rather extensive playlist) that make me happy. Just the opening notes can be enough to help me shake off a less-than-desirable mood. What are your go-to get-happy songs?

I love the fact that there are twelve new beginnings every year. Who needs a new year? (Well, I like it once a year, of course.) So at the beginning of every month, I start ANEW!

My New Month Resolution is to meditate every day. Every several days I read a new article about how wonderful meditation is for you, from disease-fighting and staving off arthritis to increasing calmness and empathy.

Though I have meditated off and on for years and always at the end of a yoga practice, I would really like it to be as second-nature as, I don't know, eating a treat with my coffee.

So here is my 30 (31) day challenge: meditate at least 5 minutes a day (I'd really like 15 to 20 minutes).

Anyone else up for doing a challenge?

So, I've done a lot of talking about how I'm going to do this awesome 60s spy c.d. and everything and have been working (and working) on it in my own little studio since the beginning of January. Only thing is, the dominant features of 60s spy music are features that I cannot do in my own little studio. Even when working (and working). So I'm going to heave a sigh and heave those songs I wrote up to the shelf to wait for when I can have a baritone electric guitarist, some horns, a percussionist and some strings to help me. And start working on the following project which is my...

Holiday c.d.! Yes! I am aware that it is a wee bit early to be thinking on those terms but I'll strengthen my resolve, resolutely drink copious amounts of hot chocolate under a ceiling fan while getting into the spirit of the (faraway) season.

Thank you all for your patience as I skip to and fro between project ideas!emma wallacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09521112479153552434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928685299304518642.post-42940448452998128052013-04-24T09:19:00.000-04:002013-04-24T09:19:00.569-04:00Step Stools and Sippy Cups

I was telling my mother, elatedly, that I'd figured out a technique to keep me from losing my temper with my very, shall we say, spirited 2-year-old. After I got her expected kudos, I finished, on a down and, 'realistic' note,

The tiniest bit of thrill ran through me. Maybe I wouldn't! At some point, I'd needed a sippy cup to drink without spilling juice, a step stool to reach the sink when I washed my hands and a fire alarm ready and waiting whenever I cooked rice (true story: I set off the fire alarm at my dormitory during move-in day when everyone was halfway in and out with boxes and furniture. Obviously, I never claimed the charred pot as my own). The reasons are all different - I'm better at drinking juice now, i am tall enough to reach the sink on my own and my husband does the cooking.

Tony Robbins says that the past doesn't equal the future and that's a pretty liberating thought. I mean, we never KNOW what will happen to change! Sometimes it's so hard to see, not only in our own lives, but in the world at large, but things do change. People used horses to get around town! Women never used to be able to wear pants. Cell phones were a luxury a few power players could afford.

So that thing? That thing you always seem to do no matter how much you try or always seem to not do no matter how much you try? You never know! It might be next year's memory of a triumph - a growth that allows you to reach the sink now.

And isn't that the best?

Open Your Windows

I know, I know, your view is possibly not the same as the above photo's view of Tuscany, but the majority of pollutants in your house are actually from inside your house! So if you open your window, not only are you lowering your electricity bills, but you are cleaning the air in your home. And this is the perfect time of year to enjoy the sound of birds singing, breezes stirring leaves and children laughing on the way home from school.

Host a Clothing Swap

Odds are you have a bunch of clothes (or even jewelry and decor!) you don't really wear anymore (not that you ever wore decor, but I think you know what I mean). So rather than toss them out or let them soak up dust in the recesses of your closet, host a swap with friends! It's the perfect time of year for a party (it's been forever since all the holiday ones!) and everyone could end up some great new-to-them clothes - no plastic bags or shipping necessary.

Go to Bed Early

I was reading through an article one day and read that some countries impose a lighting curfew so that people don't use so much electricity at night. Now, as a die-hard night owl, the idea of having to go to bed early seems like a terrible idea but that doesn't mean that you can't take a night or two a week and just go to bed an hour earlier! Think of the fun of reeeeeeaaally stretching out in your bed and daydreaming a little rather than conking off in two seconds because you're so exhausted. Sounds kind of dreamy, doesn't it?

Plant flowers!

They make bees happy and butterflies happy and people happy too! These clay/compost/seed balls are so fun - just throw them in an abandoned field or dusty median or even your own yard to make wildflowers grow. But really any packet of wildflowers or herbs will do - just pick out some hardy ones, sprinkle and wait for the magic to happen.

Any ones I've missed that you can think of? Do tell!
1. Warby Parker glasses.
I love companies that make it a part of their business to make the world a better place. And Warby Parker is one of those treasures; they donate a pair of glasses for every pair purchased. They have a delicious selection of frames AND they send out some for you to try on at home before you make a decision.
2. An upright piano
I'll confess it here: I have a keyboard. A Yamaha P-80 that I've had since 2002. That I absolutely and completely adore. But, I'd really, truly love to have an old upright piano for my 2-year-old and me to bang around on. I know grand pianos are so much fancier but I love that kind of jangly, warm upright piano sound.
Although I have yet to be up in a hot air balloon, I find them so completely appealing. And whenever I see them I think of it being a sign for something great. "Oh, there's an ad for such-and-such with a HOT AIR BALLOON! It's a sign." And this hair clip from Square Peg Meg is oh-so-nice and I think whenever I wear it, I'd have a lucky day.

This is a guest post I did for the fabulous Michelle Ward a couple of months back.

I used to teach piano/voice/songwriting at a music studio. At one point, I had over seventy students on my schedule. Most of them, as you could guess, were children, but I did have a pretty sizable amount of adults.

Every time I had that first lesson with an adult, it was the same thing: they’d come in, kind of embarrassed, almost like they were apologizing for not being 20 or 50 years younger. But here’s the thing: while Mozart gets all the press, I had several adult students that progressed and learned faster than most children. Adults do have advantages, you know, they have stronger, bigger fingers, they understand that one-eighth plus one-eighth equals one quarter and they don’t have to sing the alphabet song to figure out what comes after ‘C.’

But there are two big things that stand in the way of adult students. One is the whole time/scheduling thing, of course. Kids are used to having homework and practicing and they don’t have to worry about getting dinner on the table or taking care of sick relatives or anything like that.

But even putting that to the side, here’s the biggest thing: adults feel self-conscious about learning. It’s true! Kids make excuses about not practicing, sure, but they don’t apologize. If children make a mistake or play a song wrong, I can just show them where they messed up and they will correct it. An adult will actually say, “sorry” and then probably follow up with a reason why they made the mistake. If a beginning adult was waiting to start their lesson while an advanced kid was finishing up theirs, the adult would always feel so sheepish, even if the child had been taking lessons for three years and the adult only three months. And, while I have never had a child cancel a lesson because they didn’t think the song was ready and therefore “didn’t want to waste my time,” I think almost every adult student did at least once.

And I understand! I feel shy when trying to pronounce a tricky word in a new language and get frustrated when trying to understand HTML coding. “I should know this!” I think. But WHY should we? Even for the most accomplished person in the world, there are infinitely more things they don’t know than they do.

So here’s a challenge – embrace not knowing! Embrace not knowing how to use Tumblr, or sketch a face, or diaper a newborn or start your business! Learn like a kid – no apologies, no embarrassment. If not knowing something is holding you back from doing something you want or living a life you love, think of it – Mozart would have no idea how to use a toaster oven.

But he could learn…

It really, truly changed my life. I watched it nine times in this little arthouse theater in Seattle. I remember trudging through the puddles from the bus stop in my long brown plaid coat, buying my ticket from the little window and then walking on that silent, thick, burgundy carpet to my seat with such joy at the prospect of spending my afternoon in dreamy, Parisian bliss.
I know it's not very sexy or glamorous but I fear that I have allergies. And when I have an allergy attack, I tend to sneeze. A lot. Like four in a row. Fortunately, I can keep my allergies at bay by incorporating local honey into my diet (it really works, guys, it just takes a couple months to work but it DOES).

Anyways, I've been listening to a lot of 80s pop music lately - for some reason, it seems to have such a spirit of optimism in it. Maybe because I didn't really start listening to 80s pop music until I was in my 20s (in my childhood which did take place in the 80s, I was listening to jazz, classical and hymns. True story)...

But this song (and the video!) are a perfect example of the 80s sound that's been in my head lately. And, HOW GREAT IS THIS VIDEO?! (Yes, it needed all caps.)

I used to work in a traditional job at a library creating copy for the monthly newsletter. I did other things too, plan events, send out press releases, etc., but that monthly newsletter was my main THING. And when I did it I swore (not out loud, it was a library, after all) that I would only ever do project-based jobs as soon as I got out of there. I was working on my music on the side at the time and felt so happy that the nature of music is project-based.

But here I am, after a new album release, and I have NO IDEA what to do next! I mean, I know I could get started on my next album and I will but I think this is why people who don't like project-based jobs don't like them.

Because, sometimes, getting started is the hardest thing to do.

What about you? Do you prefer project-based jobs? If so, how do you get motivated to start the next project?

I hope your 2013 is off to a completely wonderful start (as mine has been! Yay!)!

Unsquare Dance. LOVE this song.

One of my very, absolute favorite pianists* and composers passed away yesterday. Dave Brubeck, known mostly for Take Five, was a musical genius and innovator.

Often musicians, jazz musicians in the 60s for sure, are known for addictions, hard living and tragedies. But one thing that stood out when I watched a documentary on him a few years back was that he was happy. He was a devoted family man and his career was both successful and fun. Also, like a lot of musicians, he was at the forefront of social change, rejecting the racism of the day by having a mixed race band and refusing to play in clubs that wouldn't allow all of the members of his band in.

One of the things I love about his music and his life is how much he enjoyed both. There is real joy and happiness that comes through the melodies and unusual time signatures. When I auditioned for a summer jazz camp, the song I chose to play was Blue Rondo a la Turk - it was a natural transition for a classical pianist trying to move into jazz because of the elegant technicality that cradled his quirky rhythms and one-of-a-kind scales.

I'm glad he lived a full, happy life (he was 91, would have been 92 today) but I will always wish he could've stayed around forever.

Rest in peace, Mr. Brubeck. Thank you for your inspiration and exuberance.

This month's Song Sketch was actually recorded a couple years ago by Dan Garcia when I lived in Pasadena, CA. But believe it or not, it fits TWO of the requests my Facebook fans on my page! One person requested a 'funked up Silent Night' and another requested Blue Christmas so, yay!

I AM hoping to record another (I had so many great suggestions!) but I am just now recovering from a nasty, mean-spirited cold so my vocals if I recorded today would be, how do I say it, hmm, awful.

Hoping you all are having a wonderful, delightful start to your holiday season! emma wallacehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09521112479153552434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928685299304518642.post-2730324885871856532012-11-16T00:24:00.003-05:002012-11-16T00:24:55.443-05:00Music on Breaking Amish!

I so love this song! I actually did a cover of it (which you can hear here) a couple years ago.

But the reason I posted this song is because I was inspired by Billie's gorgeous styling for one of the songs on my upcoming record (out first week in November! Probably!). I just love her lilting, kind of lazy way she hits her higher notes. My favorite of her songs is Easy Living but this one seemed perfect for a Sunday.
