Do It Again

I've often thought about how vastly underrated Marilyn Monroe is. Although she may be properly lauded as a sex symbol, movie star and fashionista, one rarely hears much about her distinctive singing voice.

She is actually one of my favorite singers of that era. Her voice had an unexpectedly low quality and a little quavery vibrato at the end of her phrases adding her trademark sexiness and vulnerability. Marilyn, although keeping her style consistent, was also able to effectively act out her song - quite a difficult thing to master. Watch her in Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, I'm Through With Love and (my favorite) I Wanna Be Loved By You - totally different! And yet all equally her.

  2. I Love Marilyn Monroe. Liking her makes you even more awesome. I have always wanted to direct or star in a production of Some Like It Hot and I've toyed with the idea of a modern remake for years.

  3. I too love Marilyn. Although I have heard a lot more criticism than praise about her voice, I think I think it is pleasant and the sexy/sultry/vulnerable quality is evocative and attractive. When she sings she sounds like she means it…but…
I like your voice even better…a little less vulnerable, maybe, but that is a good thing.

  4. i have to admit i've always sort of overlooked her, because of her super sultry sex symbolness, but you really are shedding a new light on her!

  5. I very much agree! Marilyn was one of my favorite old Hollywood icons growing up and though I later went onto love other stars she's still one of the specials. Also, yeah... her singing was so ahead of it's time :)
