And You'll Spread Your Wings and You'll Take to the Sky

Song Sketch

Well, it's August! It's the sultriest month of summer, I think. June seems fresh and inviting, July seems like vacation and the beach and August seems like heeeeeeaaaaaat. Where you spend the whole month searching for shade. This gorgeous song by George Gershwin perfectly captures that lazy feel when you just can't possibly compete with the high temperature.

This song has been covered by just about everyone (because it's just so gorgeous) from Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to Scarlett Johansson and Peter Gabriel. Even Janis Joplin has done it! But I've always wanted to cover it myself and I thought the first day of August would be the perfect time.

It's also a lullaby (one of my uncles used the lyrics of it for his birth announcement) so it seems appropriate as Baby is on my mind!

What are some of your favorite 80s songs?

  3. This song is beautiful! I'd love a copy!

I think my favorite 80s songs are anything by the Cure, although the 80s are not my favorite decade. I prefer 90s music.

Every time August comes around, I can't believe it's almost winter again, lol.

  5. Thanks, Emma! I hope so too. :) Can't wait to get over there and experience a Northern Hemisphere August, rather than the cold and mouldy one we're having down here. This song sums up sweltering summer days for me, too - you know those kind of days where all you can hear is insects and the air seems to shimmer?

  6. I am so happy you recorded this song! This is the lullaby my mother always sang to me (along with lullaby of broadway, which might explain why I went into theater). Please send me a copy!

  7. There can never be too many versions of "Summertime"! This one is lovely, and I'd love a copy. [valerie at valeriemeachum dot com]

I discovered your music through Nora, for whom I recently played Titania. In the next couple weeks, I'll finally be getting around to editing my video diary for the show. Would you mind if I used "Pet (Helena's Lament)" in it? I'll happily point people to your website in the video itself as well as in the YouTube description. More people should hear you!
