Do Not Cry, and I Will Sing a Lullabye

Picture by Mary Cassatt and from here

As promised at the start of this year, I'm planning on releasing a lullaby album sometime soon. Initially, I was having a bit of difficulty working on it be
cause, I think a lullaby should be really simple - just piano and vocals - and most of the lullabies I was planning on doing would be covers... Sound like anything I already do? That's what I thought too!

So I'm thinking of releasing a collection of Song Sketches - some I've already done and some I will be doing - and maybe a couple extras thrown in for fun.

What I want to know is what constitutes a lullaby to you? For me, it has to be simple, not too difficult to sing (it may be 2 a.m. when you're singing it so quality vocal control may be at a minimum), and have non-offensive lyrics (love songs are fine - naughty songs, well, there's a better person to sing them to).

Are there any songs in particular you think scream lullaby*? Any songs I've donethat you think would make a good lullaby? Any help would be completely appreciated!

*Maybe a bad choice of words - gently call 'lullaby'

  2. At first I was a bit disappointed to hear that your next album would be lullabies, since I love your original songs so much! But then I was thinking about how I sometimes suffer from insomnia, and one way I try to help it is by listening to relaxing music in the evening. This may be just the thing! As far as song ideas, there is Billy Joel's "Goodnight my Angel." Or maybe you've already done that one and I just forgot.

  3. I agree with Jaclyn--"Goodnight my Angel" would be lovely.

  4. Another one is "Lullaby" by Emmy Rossum (she was in the Phantom of the Opera movie). It's on her album "Inside Out," which is kind of new-agey, with lots of echos and electronic effects. It might be nice to see a simpler take on it, with just voice and piano.

  5. "Lullaby" by Priscilla Ahn. I like the sweet melody very much =))
Yeah, the song is a bit about social criticism and I don't think that's sth. to sing to children, but I so love the melody. I sang that to my niece when she was about 5 months and she just loved it :))

  8. If you do end up writing your own, keep it simple and sweet. When I am singing to my baby, I almost always make up words because I can never remember the real ones!

  9. Oh what a lovely idea - I often sing to my girls - but it is usually the Beatles :P - the only songs I know all the words to.
