Je Ne Sais Pas Choisir...

So, it was so much fun theming my posts last week, I've decided to do it again this week!  Crazy, crazy fun, I know.


This week's theme is... girl singers!  Or girls singing?  Or, well, the theme isn't quite as clear-cut as last week's but it is still awesome. Yeah.


This is one of my favorite girl singers - Emily Loizeau.  I'm pretty sure I've posted about her several times before but in case there is a reader who has missed it, here she is again.  Her music is just so happy and fun and charming - a wonderful combination.  


The two songs I've posted are from her L'Autre Bout du Monde album; one is live (the guy plays piano backwards!) and the other a marvelously clever music video.

She's Amazing! And French!

One of my favorite musicians/songwriters/singers is Emily Loizeau. Her music is perfectly melodic and delightfully odd. I actually haven't listened to her newest album yet but her first album, L'Autre Bout de Monde, is one my most-listened-to albums in my music collection. For you Andrew Bird fans, she does a charming duet with him on the album.

Musical Muses

As a female singer-songwriter, I am a little embarrassed that the primary musical inspirations I mention (Sting! Harry Connick, jr! Randy Newman! Thelonious Monk! Etc.) are men. So I wanted to discuss some female musicians and songwriters that have influenced my music.

Sarah Vaughan

She was the very first jazz singer I discovered and she's still my favorite. Her singing is so emotive and Her Lullaby of Birdland is breathtaking.

Astrud Gilberto

I love Astrud's sexy but innocent voice and her completely unaffected manner of singing along with her song choices. AND she got to do a duet with George Michael. Here is a video of her singing Bim Bom. So adorable!

Suzanne Vega

The Christmas after I first started writing music, my sister-in-law gave me Nine Objects of Desire by Ms. Vega and I listened to it around nine million times. Caramel is one of the sexiest songs off the album.

Emily Loizeau

Emily Loizeau is delightfully quirky and her piano playing very accomplished. I actually wrote another blog entry about her a while ago. Here is Jalouse from L'Autre Bout de Monde.

Madeleine Peyroux

Her music is just so delightfully arranged and sung and evokes feelings of Paris in the rain. I love her cozy Don't Wait Too Long.

Music I'm Loving Right Now...

I am loving Emily Loizeau. Her voice is totally captivating and her style completely endearing. I really like her instrumental pieces and the way she effortlessly merges classical and pop. Most of the songs off her album are in French but that doesn't mean a non-Francophone can't pick up on her delightful humor and sincerity. You can watch her music video here.
